Is it racist to suggest that immigration from Mexico is a major concern for the overpopulation of the U.S.?
Mother Earth magazine suggests that we use population control in our country to show other countries a good example and save the environment, planet, etc. But what if we just halted immigration, wouldn’t we be technically just replacing our population with 2.1 babies per couple? I live in California, and have seen my own home town increase substantially over the last twenty years, but people don’t have huge families here. In fact it’s mostly a retirement community. I read that 95% of California’s population growth stems from immigration, so doing the math, it seems like U.S. citizens can do little about their population growth by having less babies. I don’t know if these are propaganda figures, either Mother Earth’s assertions or my immigration statistics. Would a poor and undereducated country such as Mexico or India care whatsoever to control their baby making just by us controlling one-another’s reproduction? Anyone out there that can set me straight?
Cut down to basics, it’s not racist to say that immigration from one particular region is the largest contributor to population growth in the US. In all countries that are a haven for immigrants, it’s a fact that they are coming from close neighbors. In the UK, it’s immigration from the Middle East and Africa. In Oceania, it’s immigration from Asia/Polynesia. If the US were situated elsewhere in the world, it would be some other country that contributed to the majority of immigrants.
What does get racist is when you lump everybody from one country in to the same category – illegal, uneducated etc.
I myself am an immigrant to the US. I’m not Hispanic, uneducated or illegal. Yet I constantly see myself lumped in the same category as illegals, simply because people tar all foreigners with the same brush.
As far as the reproduction control goes … China is the only country I know offhand that has a limit on how many children people can have. I don’t know about you, but I’d prefer not to live under communist rule.
